After qualifying with an Optometry degree, Kanya Pillay went into private practice hoping to grow a thriving business. With the high failure rate of small businesses it was challenging to grow the practice, to where it needed to be. After a long journey she managed to see instantaneous results by using this niche digital marketing technique. This is her story:

Entrepreneurship Journey

Kanya Pillay

I’m an Optometrist and have been in private practice for 21 years now, and for 19 of those years we’ve been just about surfacing whilst always trying to increase sales. Like all business owners, I was looking for high return on investments. We implemented all forms of conventional marketing including pamphlets, newspaper ads, posters, A-boards; all with no success worth mentioning.

After a competitive screening process, in 2016 I was selected for a bursary with an incubator to do a program to grow my business. I committed to this intensive program for 2 years obtaining a 100% for every one of the weekly assignments. The program included weekly lectures and weekly 1 hour sessions with Strategy, Personal, Finance and Marketing Guides. Yet, in the second year I failed the course, because I couldn’t increase my sales despite following the program to the tee. It was very disheartening.

Introduction to Digital Marketing

In 2018 I signed up for a small digital marketing course with Elite Inc, a company that offers an apprenticeship program. In the same year I committed to a very intense 16 week course with Elite Inc. The course was really expensive, but the benefits were two-fold. It would enable me to increase sales in my practice, and also learn a new profession. Marketing, specifically online marketing really appealed to me from the very beginning. In the past I succeeded in getting over 2000 “Likes” on my Facebook page, but none of them converted into sales. We posted promotions and content regularly on our social media pages, but again no conversions into sales. Learning how to convert engagements into sales was a challenge. Our website was cool, and we advertised the practice on many online platforms, but couldn’t seem to get any clients from those efforts.

learntquoteBlock - AboutI learnt a very niche skill on this course called funnel building which is a very strategic way of converting eyeballs to sales. My first funnel was launched on the 20th September 2018 and by the 30th of the same month I made R52 000 in sales from Facebook alone with an ad spend of R5200. From September 2018 to now our lowest ROI (return on investment) was 455% and the highest return on investment was 3036%! Our average ROI over the last 17 months is 1075%.  The practice doubles and sometimes triples in turnover, compared to previous years, every single month since I started digital marketing.

Project Management Experience

In early 2019, I exited the operations of the practice and employed a full-time optometrist in the practice, but continued marketing the practice remotely. Elite Inc offered me a position to work remotely as a project manager, managing their funnel building. This was an amazing opportunity for me to sharpen my skills under the direct tutelage of proven experts. The experience acquired working on such monster funnels was priceless.

After about a year and I decided to run a digital marketing agency to help other businesses grow as I know first hand how difficult this.

Digital Marketing Agency

Assisting clients along the way I obtained a minimum of a 220% return on investment for them. Funnel building done strategically is like opening a tap of sales. My experience can testify to that. After 21 years, I’ve found the key to improving sales. It’s truly amazing how this form of marketing works! I have a vision of growing businesses and making a measurable difference.

Let's build something together.

Resourceful – Kanya always goes over and above to assist and help to try and find solutions to problems as well as assisting finding quality free graphics and videos.

No detail escapes Kanya, she catches everything. This is extremely important in a project manager role, especially on funnel projects where there are millions of moving parts. Kanya has the ability to deal with a lot of complexity and detail at the same time, and this helps team members to better stay organised and stay on track. Invaluable attribute!
